Jakarta, Although advertising infant formula for children under 1 year of age should not be aired in public media, but there are still many women who give formula to their infants. Indonesia even recorded as the second largest country in the world who consume formula milk after China.

Data Riskesdas (Health Research Association) in 2002 and 2007 for exclusive breastfeeding in infants at the age of 2 months showed a declining rate, namely 64 percent in 2002 to 48.3 percent in 2007.

Even based on Riskesdas in 2010, the number of mothers who breastfeed infants exclusively for six months fell to 15.3 percent of the original 30 percent in 2007.

"Exclusive breastfeeding tends to decrease. There are several things that cause, among others, breast milk is not enough information given to mothers, environmental conditions (location, time) that does not yet support for breastfeeding and the marketing of infant formula that is not orderly. No order is meant infant formula is not marketed openly but covertly, "explains Dr. Minarto, MPS, Director of Nutrition Kemenkes in a media gathering at the House Kemenkes, Jakarta, Friday (08/05/2011).

According to Dr. Minarto, veiled marketing of infant formula manufacturers are often carried out by directly targeting mothers with babies under 1 year old or even new mothers. Formulas are also still widely sold freely in retail or supermarket.

"The business formula is very ... very arrogant because they use the right communication. Sales of infant formula is a big business with a U.S. $ 11.5 billion in 2008. Growth in sales of infant formula is predicted to rise 37 percent to U.S. $ 42.7 billion in 2013, "explains Dr. Utami Roesli, SpA, MBA, IBCLC, Lactation Center Chairman of Indonesia.

Dr. Utami explained, almost two-thirds of the increase in sales (U.S. $ 7.5 billion) came from Asia Pacific countries, with China (U.S. $ 5.2 billion) and Indonesia (U.S. $ 1.1 billion) as the biggest contributor.

"How can our children are not sick, not autism, brain is empty, if the mothers Indonesia is still much to give formula to their infants," said Dr. Utami.

Based on market developments, the main contributor to the growth of global business formula is:

1. China (U.S. $ 5.2 billion)
2. Indonesia (U.S. $ 1.1 billion)
3. Mexico (U.S. $ 602 million)
4. Russia (U.S. $ 553 million)
5. Saudi Arabia (U.S. $ 354 million)
6. Thailand (U.S. $ 242 million).
