Jakarta, Cholesterol is not the only threat behind the meat menu while celebrating Eid al-Adha. There are still threats forgotten, namely Esofagial Gastro Reflux Disease (GERD) or acid reflux because of crazy when you eat meat.

At every celebration of Eid al-Adha, the people with cholesterol problems are usually already knew not to eat too much meat victims. But for normal cholesterol levels, the threat of GERD is often overlooked because they do not have any risk when eating meat.

Clinicians from the University of Indonesia, Dr. Ari Fahrial Sham, SpPD-KGEH said GERD is actually caused by the weakness of the valve which limits the stomach and esophagus. For those who have these risk factors, excessive eating meat can trigger an attack of GERD.

"Factors that induce the onset of GERD, which probably had been there before, is because eating meat in a short time in excess," writes Dr. Ari in his email to reporters, as quoted Sunday (06/11/2011).

According to Dr. Ari, excessive meat consumption will further increase the risk of GERD if excessively cooked with coconut milk. The use of spices that stimulate such as acid and spicy will also trigger the movement of stomach contents to rise into the esophagus.

To prevent this, Dr. Ari gives some tips when eating the meat of the victim as follows:

1. Do not eat meat to excess in a short time
2. Avoid eating meat along with the viscera (intestine, liver, brain, lung, spleen)
3. Avoid ingredients that are too stimulating for example spicy and sour
4. After eating meat do not drink coffee, alcohol and fizzy drinks
5. During avoid eating foods that contain chocolate and cheese
6. Do not jump in bed within 2 hours after eating meat.

Dr. Ari added that the meat in principle is an important source of nutrition because they contain very high protein. Besides being very useful during the growth period, the protein is also needed to repair cells damaged by illness or due to the aging process.

But on the other hand, meat also contain fat. Fat could actually be an energy reserve, but if the excess will hinder the process of gastric emptying and increase the risk of GERD or reflux of gastric contents, including stomach acid into the esophagus.

Acid reflux into the esophagus is always accompanied by symptoms of chest pain or heart burn, so it is often mistaken for heart pain. Pain is also felt through the esophagus and if the rise continues until it reaches the tongue will cause a bitter taste sensation.

Other symptoms that often accompanies acid reflux is heartburn pain, abdominal bloating, fullness and frequent belching. In some people, these conditions also induce or trigger shortness of breath, chronic cough, rhinitis or inflammation of the nose, laryngitis, or inflammation of the vocal cords and sometimes the sense of pain in the tooth.
