Jakarta, There are many ways to combat mosquito-borne diseases, including malaria and dengue fever. Creating a modified mosquitoes resistant disease is one of them, but the most practical way fixed by installing netting.

Some scientists in the world has a lot to create modifications or genetically modified mosquitoes mosquito. This type of modification may range from a sterile male mosquitoes to mosquito cannibals who could prey on fellow mosquito population so depleted over time.

A botanist from the University of Melbourne are often researching Malaria, Prof Geoff McFadden confirmed that there are many things you can do with the modification of mosquitoes. One is, creating a resistant parasite that mosquitoes do not transmit the disease.

Nevertheless, Prof. McFadden assess such research takes a long time that it took another way which provides a solution more quickly. There are many ways you can give the same result, namely controlling the mosquito population.

"A lot more simple ways such as by preventing mosquito breeding. Or the most simple way to prevent disease, do not get bitten by using mosquito nets for example," said Prof. McFadden after giving a public lecture at the Australian Embassy, Brass, Jakarta, Wednesday (9 / 11/2011).

Although including a very old disease, malaria is still a threat, especially in the tropics. It is estimated that each year there are about 1 million deaths from malaria, while the recorded cases of transmission around 500 million people each year.

Another threat is the latest discovery of new drugs to treat this disease. The most popular drug Quinine pills that almost was not working anymore, while the only remaining drug that is Artemisinin (ACT / Artemisinin-Combination Therapies) reportedly began to be immune in some cases on the border of Cambodia and Thailand.
