Fotonovela are novels that contain photographs that story like a telenovela. The story is full of drama that is often considered redundant fans liked it.
The tradition of seeing fotonovela or apparently so ingrained telenovela for American society in Latin America is called regular or Latino. Because of that rule in Milwaukee, America will use fotonovela to convey health information.
The idea to create the health literature that is entertaining yet informative emerged after researchers from the Medical College of Wisconsin and the Centro de la Comunidad Unida, United Community Center (UCC), doing research terumata on local women.
"Many women say that not much information available to them, and almost all the health information contained medical jargon or a bad translation," explains Melanie Hinojosa, a child health researcher at the Medical College of Wisconsin, as reported by latino.foxnews.com, Tuesday ( 03/22/2011).
He said the woman in Milwaukee has changed the way his thinking by researchers and introduced by fotonovela specifically for health information, which is a popular culture in Latin America. This may be an effective way to provide health information.
"Fotonovela has an interesting storyline with a bit of drama and spices. It makes you want to read it all to end," said Angelica Rendon Delgado, a researcher at UCC is also involved in the project.
Fotonovela also been used in states like California and Florida to share a variety of health information for the population of Latin as the risks associated with unprotected sex and warning signs of depression.
The women chose the topic of fotonovela Milwaukee, the first will be focused on type 2 diabetes, which is a chronic disease in which cells do not use insulin properly.
After forming a group and get a 450,000 dollar grant from the Healthier Wisconsin Partnership, researchers distributed digital cameras to local women and asked them to take photos when shopping and preparing food.
The women also took nutrition classes which will then help create a story board, characters and action plan in fotonovela.
"It is important to involve the local Latin community in every step of the project because they know the audience in fotonovela. The way they talk, dress and act better than the researchers," said Hinojosa.
Graciela Hernandez, a local Latin mother of four children whose families are involved as a model for fotonovela, said that the media is making a big impact on the health of himself and his family.
"I'm so use more vegetables while cooking and check the nutrition label, not only calories but for fat and sodium," said Graciela Hernandez.
Delgado said this is a preliminary study, conducted on 50 random members of the Latin community, shows that people who read this little book has a better knowledge of diabetes prevention.
"They all really like it. They found it really touched and said can connect with people and situations that exist in the book," said Delgado.
