Jakarta, There are various ways you can do for someone to quit smoking. But recent studies show acupuncture is less effective in helping people quit.

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese therapy that uses needles to stimulate specific points on the body. This technique works on the concept of life energy known as Qi or Chi.

Methods previously used acupuncture to reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms (withdrawal nicotine) are generally experienced by a person when trying to quit smoking, especially in heavy cigarette addicts.

Previous studies have suggested acupuncture can reduce the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. This treatment by inserting needles in the external ear or other body part for 15-20 minutes and is repeated several days later.

But the results of meta-analysis of 13 studies conducted by White and colleagues from the Peninsula Medical School, Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, England revealed the results of the effectiveness of acupuncture depends on the location of selected points, as quoted from MedIndia, Friday (14/10/2011 ).

The experts finally conduct randomized trials to compare acupuncture, laser therapy and other therapies used for smoking cessation. The results found no consistent evidence that acupuncture, acupressure or laser therapy can help to stop smoking.

This suggests that acupuncture therapy may be less effective in helping someone quit smoking compared with other evidence-based therapies such as nicotine replacement therapy (nicotine replacement therapy / NRT).

Even so researchers reveal perform acupuncture may be better than not doing anything, at least to help in the short term. However, further studies are needed to determine the points where the body can effectively help stop smoking.
