Boston, Sexual intercourse is performed through the anus had a risk 20 times more likely to transmit the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). With a vaginal gel, the effectiveness of prevention of HIV infection as effective when used in the anus by gays.

Vaginal Gel is a breakthrough that had previously proved effective in preventing HIV transmission in women. The results presented in Vienna last year said this gel can reduce the risk of HIV transmission by up to 50 percent.

But when it was, the experts still doubt its effectiveness when used by gay men who have sex through the anus or rectum. The surface of the anus only a single layer of cells, much thinner than the vaginal surface layers.

With that difference, the risk of HIV infection in unprotected anal sex is estimated to 20 times greater than normal sex relations through the vagina. HIV will more easily penetrate the thin anal cell surface compared to the cell surface of the vagina.

But these concerns are refuted by recent research presented recently in Boston. Quoted by Reuters on Tuesday (01/03/2011), experiments on this gay show vaginal gel is as effective when used for sex through the anus.

The researchers have done little modification in order to secure a vaginal gel formulations used in the anus. Active substances used remained the same, namely tenofovir patent held by an American pharmaceutical company, Gilead Sciences Inc..

Besides effective in preventing HIV infection in anal sex, vaginal gel modification was also relatively safe. Only a small proportion of participants who experienced side effects, and even then not too severe diarrhea and cramps in the lower abdomen.
