Sperm Quality Indicators

Jakarta, Male fertility depends on the quality of sperm produced. There are several indicators to assess it, some can be observed with the naked eye and some must be examined in the laboratory.

Quoted from WebMD, Sunday (09.01.2011), the following seven indicators of healthy sperm and quality.

1. Volume
In one ejaculation, the penis ejects sperm normally about 2-6 milliliters. If less than that number, there may be problems with fertility or can also be caused by too-frequent ejaculation frequency (including through masturbation).

2. Clotting time
A viscous fluid containing sperm proteins and will clot (coagulation) if left in open air for 20-30 minutes. If it remains liquid until the time is too long, there may be an infection in the urinary tract.

3. The number of sperm cells
This indicator is not observable with the naked eye, should be examined under a microscope. The number of sperm cells in a single ejaculate is normally around 40 million or 0 in men who had undergone a vasectomy. Less than that amount can be said to be less fertile, although it is possible to remain childless.

4. Sperm shape (morphology)
To be able to say well, at least 70 percent of sperm cells in a single ejaculation should have the ideal shape. If abnormal sperm cells too much (have 2 tails, short tails or small head), a man's ability to fertilize their partner will be reduced.

5. Sperm movement (motility)
The quality of sperm movement is said to be good if quick enough. At least 60 percent of sperm cells in a single ejaculate should show a rapid movement, the rest does not matter if a bit slow.

6. Acidity (pH)
Semen with a pH of 7.2 to 8.0 is an ideal condition for sperm cells to survive the most optimal move with the movement. Conditions of acidity is too high or too low can kill sperm cells.

7. The number of white blood cells
Normally the presence of white blood cells are not detected in the semen. White blood cells were detected in the urine and semen in the event of an infection, so it is sometimes found along with some of the bacteria that cause
of infection.
