Jakarta, the sex hormone testosterone is known to make men more muscular, has a deeper voice and more hair than women. But apparently this hormone also protects men from disease and allergic inflammation.
Research from Germany found that men are better at fighting the disease inflammation (inflammation) as compared with women. This is because of the role of the male sex hormone known as testosterone.
Inflammation is one of the body of a person's initial response to the presence of harmful stimuli such as pathogens, bacteria, microorganisms or allergens that trigger allergies.
In the analysis of cells known to men and women have different ways a reaction to the presence of inflammatory stimuli. Male sex hormones play an important role in modulating the immune response.
"These conditions make most women more prone to arthritis, psoriosis arthritis or asthma," said Oliver Werz, professor of pharmaceutical and medical chemistry from the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany, as quoted from Indiavision, Thursday (07/28/2011).
In this study researchers isolated immune cells from men and women were analyzed in a tube to test the activity of enzymes responsible for the production of pro-inflammatory substances. Known phospholipase D enzymes responsible for the production of pro-inflammatory substances in the male more or less active.
This condition makes the female body produces nearly two times as many pro-inflammatory substances than men. The results of this study have been reported in the scientific issue of the FASEB Journal.
This study involves several researchers from Germany, Sweden and Naples Italy, and further research is needed to determine whether this hormone could be used as one form of new therapies or not.
